& DOLCE 🍰 Solaria Square, Bayan Lepas (2-minute Drive From Penang Airport)

Weekend meet-up is always an exciting activity to me, but occasionally...
I'm in dilemma because it seems like most of the great food are only available in downtown (In Penang, I'm referring to Georgetown).
Admittedly, I'd get turned off for driving long in the weekend (because I want to nua more).
Anyway, I'm so glad that Bayan Lepas region keep flourishing these days with the residential development which then F&B as well as regional office also come up after.
It means there might be more good food choices and I may not need to travel so far!
I got to discover about Solaria Square not long ago and searched out there're few dining spots that seems luring. And that was how I manage to drive short for meet up last weekend! 😝 We visited & DOLCE (AND DOLCE) for a sweet pamper, the confectionery is simply attempting!

Summer Afternoon Tea Party @ DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang

Life is about adding spices into the norm! Afternoon tea (also known as Hi-tea) is ladies' most-loved moment to indulge within, however, it could be extraordinarily joyous with little art workshop happening throughout. It's deco time on our favourite make up items, BB cushion! A smart Tai Tai in these modern days doesn't just indulge into the pastry but enjoy working on simple artwork too.

All thanks to the fruitful idea from The Butterfly Project(TBP) and DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Penang, BB Beauty Art Deco and #TeaWithHilton was held last Sunday in this summer. I attended this casual meet up with the butterflies(aka TBP community members). Participants are all Penang Lang (Penangites) while the host, Tammy (Mamasan) and the team as well as Jessica (National Marketing Content Manager of Hilton) came all the way from KL just for this meet up, much appreciated!

It may sounds against to have tau sar pneah or phong phneah serving together with english tea, but sorry, the flavourful of these two gonna turn your mind straight away, especially when it's just out from the oven!

I had the opportunity to taste out earlier on and here's the highlights on Concubine Premium Platter you wouldn't want to miss out.

Lunar Appreciation with Ghee Hiang Mooncakes

Hey peeps, you know moon cake festival is approaching when you see lanterns and moon cakes are available in major shopping malls and by the streets! It's indeed a great opportunity to build stronger relationship with friends/clients/relatives besides reunion with family, I believe people nowadays would take this chance to purchase moon cake as a sign of sincerity as well 😏.

Widely known as a trusted brand in Malaysia and even overseas, Ghee Hiang has been owning the age-old proven traditional method in pastry, significantly, Tau Sar Pneh, and sesame oil. To add a variety in pastry production, Ghee Hiang has recently launched the in-house moon cake, in conjunction with Moon Cake Festival 2017, which is believed to fall on 4 October this year.

Here to reveal Assorted Moon Cake Set 1 (4 different flavours of moon cake) before you decide to make purchase.
PS: For the illustration purpose, each moon cake is taken off from the pre-individual pack containing oxygen absorber packets.

1. Lotus Double Yolks Moon Cake
The highlight goes to the attractively orangish  on the duck yolk! Simply perfect on every bite from the combo of sweetness (from moon cake) and the saltiness of the yolk, just right and perfect 😋! Double yolk also ensure consumer get on the optimal real taste as well.

Irresistible not to demand a cut from it!

2. Pandan Lotus Single Yolk Moon Cake
If you think that double yolk is a little bit richer to you (some prefer more sweetness instead of heavy infuse of saltiness😫), just pick on those with only single yolk. Here I have this paired with pandan lotus, the authentic local flavour. It is milder overall in both aspect of sweetness and saltiness as well.

Tangan cacat, pardon over the so much realistic photo, LMAO

However, if you prefer pure taste of moon cake without much fancy add-on ingredients, I'd recommend these two.

3. Red Bean Moon Cake
One of the classical flavour that wouldn't goes wrong at all time. Mostly liked by people as we were exposed to red bean paste since small (like red bean paste bun). So, it's also another triggering factor toward sense of nostalgia, too, don't you agree 😵?

4. Green Tea Moon Cake
No doubt, this is somehow one of the favourite flavours especially from matcha lovers (like me 🙌). No jokes, fragrance from the flavour trigger my nostril upon the cutting. I was so excited over it, even before it was picked for my own indulgence.

Ayam Brand - Warm and Caring Platform for the Children

Ayam Brand is back on its annual nationwide Ayam Brand Community Care. This year marks 10th anniversary by Ayam Brand Charity Campaign to shower the love and caring to the charity homes and it has included charity houses of Penang as well.

Happening on a sunny afternoon, children from four different charity homes are all armed for Ayam Brand Junior Chef cooking competition, themed "We Care, We Are Family". They are in the team of four, each, proud representatives of Rumah Kebajikan Seri Cahaya, House of Hope, The Cerebral Paisy Children's Association of Penang and Rumah Kanah-Kanak Taman Bakti.

Added by Mr Nicholas Nyeow, Ayam Brand's Marketing Manager, cooking competition like this is a great platform to encourage children's independent skills and self confidence, not to mention, instilling healthy eating habits. What's more, they would have a memorable and fun manner at outside of the houses, too.

The ingredients were all supplied by Ayam Brand and the contestants were required for hands-on preparation for high-tea food.

With thirty minutes of time allowance, they were all focusing to serve the great food in terms of presentations, taste and not to forget, the cleanliness during food preparation.

Contestant is  concentrating in plate presentation with sliced cucumber and carrots.
Spot a big love shape from the white hat?

I was honoured to be one of the judges to evaluate the food prepared by four team of children. What I observed was their dedication and patience in doing their best for this competition. They are like none other than the usual children in terms of capability.

Tale As Old As The Ais - Georgetown, Penang

The citizen might not easily spot on this little store whereas it's apparently a favourite pit stop for the backpackers who are in their journey to explore or wander in the heart of Georgetown. Little did you know that there's a tale - difficult to believe over its little yet warming story created continuously along the operation of The Ais, a homemade ice cream store run by Oong's family.

Admittedly, I just can't help but being hooked at Tale As Old As Time where it's apparently, part of a little contribution to the title of this post. But, The Ais truly deserves for such a unique title, simply because this entry is more to spreading awareness instead of purely my humble review on the homemade ice cream.

The life-long mission in the core of The Ais, Make Children Smile blessings project. This is to help the helpless land and children in Isan, northeastern region of Thailand, bordering Laos and Cambodia. The Ais operates beyond than selling ice cream, not to mention, they invest their time to prepare it wholeheartedly to bring hope to the children, based on their resources.

I bet many of you, deep down understanding that a great production is simply an assembly of passion/huge interest, relentless of failure and re-attempt plus discovering and not to forget, long term of perseverance.

Partnering with The Ais, you can also make a so called win-win contribution to help the unfortunates too. Simply a scoop of ice cream, not a big deal to you right? Better yet, there are up to 16 unique flavours of ice cream available, I'm confident that your satisfaction and surprise guaranteed!
PS: Buy 2 Free 1 scoops is happening from time to time, make sure you follow The Ais Facebook Page to get the real-time updates from them.

Here's some of my recommendations for you in order to create good deeds for the sake of your tummy and most importantly, the children's happiness.

Double & Waffle (RM 15.90)
Two scoops up of your choice among 16 flavours of ice cream and freshly made waffle.

Feedback
Ice cream flavour: Banana + Green Tea
Simply a wonderful tea break choice for me! The big highlight, certainly, goes to the homemade ice cream. Frankly, it is the purest flavour I've ever tasted in Penang (Despite being a big fans of New Zealand Natural Ice Cream).

Trivia
  • Banana flavoured ice cream contains a faint taste of lemon as the latter one is added to avoid oxidization happens in banana flavoured ice cream.
  • Green Tea flavoured ice cream is at the right level of bitterness which is to my own liking (No additonal sugar added though)
  • Waffle itself is smaller in serving as compared to that of others. Moderately crispy outside and fluffy. We don't get to the starchy taste, simply just the fragrance of leavened batter.

Nutella Guinness (Single Scoop / RM 8.90)
A scoop portion is relatively larger at The Ais (which excites us the most)
Feedback
We love this alcohol-based where it unleashes at the back of throat, giving us sort of refreshing tasting experience.

Trivia
Promising to be a natural and fresh ice cream store, no stabilizer is added during the preparation of the ice cream. That's simply explains on its melting starts so much quick (shortly after it is served and we start to take photo). In other words, this also means that you are safe from plant, bacteria and animal-by products in consuming it.

Water Kefir (RM 8.90)
Available in Roselle, Coconut, Pineapple, Lemon, Passion Fruit and Nutmeg
Feedback
Not our go-to sipping choices despite it has a number of healthy benefits. Carrying a tiny bits of burnt and sour vinegar at times.

More about the ice cream
  • Grab your favourite unique flavour such as Horlicks, Cinnamon Plum, Butterly Pea, Charcoal Cheese
  • Vegan ice cream are coconut, mango, avocado and Gula Melaka
  • Time-consuming in the preparation - from cooking the custard, chill overnight, churn till smooth and freeze till harden. All these prepared at the premise, and only serve customer 2 days after.
