7 Wonders of Food in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

Requires nearly an hour of driving distance from Penang, Sungai Petani (commonly known as SP from its abbreviation) is the second biggest city in Kedah state where I'm based in to do my tertiary studies. I get to know that there are a number of tasty local food there. All thanks to my food companions, finally, my wish to make a food trip to SP had been realized at my last semester.

Here to list out what we had on one-day food trip in SP.

There are some food which prices are not tag along, sorry about it and price stated might be only accurate at the time of this post published, kindly take note.

#1 Toast and kopi + butter

This is not the common cafe as in Penang where egg benedict and a variety of coffee are served. If you come across to Lollipop Ropitiam located at Campbell Street, Penang. Aha, that is actually the branch from SP main outlet. However, Lollipop Cafe is slightly different in the operation mode in SP as it is none other than the usual kopitiam where we can just order Kopi O and perhaps one Hokkien Mee for breakfast. The specialty here is the toast served and also kopi o + butter.

From left to right:
Kopi O + Butter and Honey Lemon Tea

Do you feel shocked to that slice of butter floating at the kopi o like me did?
But it's one of the signature at the kopitiam!
So this is the result after we stirred that kopi.
And it tastes surprisingly good which is a totally new thing to us! The butter would trigger its fragrances as coffee flow through the molar that gives you a new satisfactory experience on your sipping.

Here comes four different kind of toast we ordered.

Polo Bakwa
RM 5.50

Tuna Cheese
RM 3.30

Classical one, kaya butter toast.
RM 3.30

Gong Ji Xia Dan ("Cock" lays egg)
RM 4.40

#2 Wan Tan Mee  云吞面

This shop lot has only one food stall which serves the famous and all time favourite Wan Tan Mee. It is usually packed with diners on weekends and holidays hence we were quite lucky during our patronage on a typical Friday morning.

RM 3.20 for a regular one.

#3  Pet Rice “狗饭”

This is one of the restaurant that was interviewed by local food tv show namely Ho Chiak 好吃. The owner initially started his business by the roadside and now the customers able to enjoy their meal at indoor restaurant due to the business expansion.

This is the so called "狗饭", the signature dish in the restaurant
Not any typical pet rice that you think of. It's just a derivative name from the name of restaurant 细九, the word "九" is homophonous with "狗" in Hokkien
The mixed rice is a combination of barbequed pork, roasted pork and scrambled eggs with rice. RM 6 per pax.

Sweet and sour egg (around RM 15)

#5 Laksa 叻沙

Another one that accepted the interview by 8tv Ho Chiak before, this is one of a few laksa stalls that still serve small pieces of fish today. Just my two cents, this is fairly delicious in overall, compatible with the ones we have in Penang.

#6 Coconut Shake

Not only Klebang in Melaka or Esplanade Food Court in Penang serve the refreshing coconut shake, we do have one in Sungai Petani too! This corner lot of terrace house is utilised as mamak stall where you could also have a plate of maggi/mee goreng or pasembur. However, we had only coconut shake since we just managed to settle the earlier one.

I like the combination of refreshing coconut juice at the bottom and that scoop of vanilla + chocolate chip flavoured ice cream, to be honest, this was considered dinner of the day, haha!
RM 2.50 for one.

#7 Waffles

Operating till late, you could enjoy your supper and relaxable conversation with your friends at a peaceful dining ambience. There are a variety of food to pick from the menu, however, we had only waffles and cheesy chicken balls. I suppose that cheesy chicken balls are simply common frozen food that we can purchase it at supermarket, not a big highlight anyway.
Let's look at the waffles.

It was our supper as we were kind of exhausted after spending a day of food trip plus a movie date, hence pardon me for not able to jot down the details of the food, I could feel my tired eyes at that time, too.

So this is sort of fruits-toppings waffles, mainly slices of bananas and strawberries, shimmered with some almond flakes.
It is different from what I usually have in Penang, less flavourful and taste healthier, definitely not to my own liking.

This is just plain one served together with three scoops of different flavours of ice cream, nothing much to shout out to be honest. A little similar to Belgium waffles or perhaps it's just me who don't know to appreciate it.

In short, I would still look forward for my next visit to this cafe as I know there are some main dish receive quite good responds from the diners, for example Chicken Gordon Bleu and Bites Signature Black Pepper Udon.

That's all about the 7 wonders of food upon a food day trip with my companions. There are a lot of mural arts (beatable with the ones in Penang!) which we discovered in between our food stops, stay tuned for the following post and if you are planning for a short escape with food pampering, you may consider to go any of seven food as stated which convenient to your itinerary.

Also, I welcome anyone of you who've been there or whoever would like to add on some info on any of the seven items, kindly comment below and I shall respond to you as soon as possible.

I hope you enjoy reading, thank you.

I'm SNOW-mad! 3.0

Most of my friends know that I very love to take selfie with SNOW app. The app adds new sticker regularly which makes me to save a lot of selfie from there. And to be honest, this app is one of the tool that I use it to cheer myself especially the treatment period earlier this year. I got to know this app as introduced in a Taiwanese variety show and since I was sort of quarantined myself in the hostel, so to kill boredom as well as my time, I had gone SNOW-mad since then!
So the following are some of the selfie I took since I first discovered the app.

Girls being girls, how could you resist to all these lovely stickers?

I can even eat maple leaf as well!

The deer effect is simply excellent, I like it the most!

I also got feedback from one of my friends saying that I have a weird hobby, haha! I would post some funny videos or selfie on my Instagram occasionally.

Another say me hiao but I don't care. This is a source of little happiness of a day, so why not?

Face wash effect is so much real and amazing!

It is also great chillax tool whenever I take a break from doing assignments or revision.

You see, I have a different role play here haha!!
From being Chang Er, The White Rabbit from Alice in the Wonderland, a baby and even oppa Song Joong Ki (Salute!)

Aha, last one. Sometimes, making myself ugly isn't a bad thing to entertain myself and my friends too! How come I feel that the last one a little bit similar to Piko Taro? That pair of eyes...

I would be happy to know you are thrilled with these patternful photos, why not you install it on your phone? It can be an effective bonding tool with your family and friends too!
Perhaps you could take this as a super super low cost Halloween themed selfie?

All stickers can be done with either short videos or selfie.
Here are two videos I have combined previously, click the link above if you haven't watched yet.

I hope you enjoy reading, thank you!

My life during the treatment period

Continue from the previous post, click here to read in case you haven't read that interesting story of mine.

With the mental and financial support from my family, I also kept giving myself positive vibes to against all odds. Let me share with you some of the scenarios I'd faced during that time.

Spot me in face mask, that was my usual look that time, whenever I was out of my room.

Coursemates' approach...

They are the first group of acquaintances of mine that saw me in such new outlook after my new roommate. They did ask about it for sure and my steady reply was just, 'oh, it's sensitive'. They merely knew about it through my words but didn't know the truth actually.

Puzzled faces all thrown on to me...

...since the first day I stepped into lecture class. Human are all-time curious creature, so it's hard for anyone of us not to look for second times when something odd is caught into our sights. I took out the courage to walk pass them as if I was a common one. What I did since then was ignoring it. I just looked on my way to have a seat and there I scrolled facebook or simply kept myself occupied with something till the lecturer came in.

Lecturer asked me in front of big group of students...

...not for once but two times, in the lecture hall occupied with nearly 100 students. He jokingly asked me for the first time whether I am having any infections or not. I gave him a nice respond by replying him with a pair of eyes smile. For the second time, he deliberately asked me because he was fed up with my coursemate doing her personal stuff with a laptop putting on the desk. I remembered he added that why couldn't I take off my face mask? To be honest, I really had that kind of impulse to show him my real situation but I didn't, at last. Hell yeah, I shed tears for the very first time in lecture hall, in my life ever. Perhaps I was sensitive over it which I felt myself like being toyed with his tone of voice for that total two times. However, I managed to calm myself shortly after.

I was since to be more a little more courageous...

Don't get it wrong, it's has nothing to do with the incident as mentioned above. I could feel the changes happened on me ever since I had the face mask to put on. I think that was due to its acting as a covering so I was quite courageous to approach lecturer regularly to ask some questions. Hence this is what I realised within myself: When you feel that you have nothing left, there you would go to reach anything just to get your things. All thanks to the face mask that act as a catalyst, I suppose? Haha!

Oh no, I switched to baby hair shampoo...

In order to reduce the irritations of chemical substances in shampoo to my skin, I switched to baby hair shampoo and I skipped conditioner as well. It was kind of disgusting to see my dyed hair especially the bottom part of my long hair turned drier day by day, I didn't bother to go for a hair cut as my full concern was about my skin.

I was extra cautious on my food intake...

There were pretty much restrictions of food that doctor advised and I really obeyed all of them! Say bye bye to dairy products ( milk, cheese, cream, cake etc ), spicy food ( tomyam and curry ), sweet food and also hot served food ( not to face my face with the heat). I even prepared diluted Milo to myself as Milo itself contains milk solid, sugar and more harmful ingredients to my skin that time. My meals were all light taste and some of my best companion were oatmeal, wheat crackers, white bread, fruits, vegetables and not to forget, plenty of water and pills. As many do, I love to eat oreo cookies as well but due to the cream that is sandwiched between, I removed it everytime and ate only the cookies, how sad it is, goodbye my lovely orea cream.

Hi to self-cooked meals...

My life routine was leaving my room just for lecture class and spending the rest of my time in the hostel. Therefore, I ought to prepare meals for myself. Shall I say it was another opportunity to advance my cooking skill? Oh well, it couldn't be extended much further with just a rice cooker anyway. I shall present to you some of my art piece, you could expect something like patients' meal.

Clear soup glass noodle with vegetable ver 1
Clear soup glass noodle with vegetable ver 2
White porridge with canned lettuce

White porridge with pork floss

Don't be surprised that I didn't add any soy sauce in my meal as well because there is a saying in Chinese that consuming something dark would leave the scar a mark, I doubt on its validity yet I just believe in whatever it comes to my mind at that time. However, thanks again to my dearest mum. She sometimes bought me pasta as she claimed that it was fine to consume the bolognese sauce occasionally. So yeah, there I made it out with my little rice cooker.

Fettucine with plain bolognese sauce

But frankly speaking, I only dare to consume pasta only when I observed the improvement occurred on my face. I think that's all about my brief sharing on my daily food intake at that treatment duration.

I slapped on bed as early as 10...

I did it almost everyday! This is to ensure that I have sufficient rest hour for myself and my biological clock works pretty efficient as I usually woke up at around 6 the next morning. And you know, avoiding from the light side was part of my role and I felt nice to wake up at six at a slightly dark surroundings where the sun rise had yet to occur at my place here. Call me weirdo.

I discovered more on youtube...

It doesn't make sense in watching a lot of skin care related tutorial videos to make myself be positive but I did that anyway. Perhaps the flawless skin appeared on the model leads me to stay firm on my role to take good care of my skin in hoping one day I can look nice too. Also, I started to watch and learn some basic make up as well. I shall express my gratitude to the nightmare once again, else, I wouldn't master some basic make up skill now. From this, I perceive that I shall really live with no regrets, follow my heart to do what I want but of course, with my brain along, too.

That's all from me on this topic. There would be another new post on this series if I recall back anything that I should add on. However, I also welcome you to drop me a comment here or perhaps an email. I would do my best to answer whatever doubt that came across your mind during your reading in this post.

Thank you for reading once again.

The Ugly Truth

Reminder: Take your own responsibility to view the photos following this post as they may cause you feel disgusting or uncomfortable.

Photo taken during Chinese New Year 2016 in a cafe. I insisted not to put down my face mask despite how many times she begged me just for a selfie.

Revealing the ugly side of one doesn't sound right at all. But I'm here to do that on myself. I urge you not to just scroll through just to view the photos but also to understand it through my words.

This photo can at least give you an idea of what is about the following. And for your information, left hand side of the photo occurred on me earlier this year and the right hand side is my current condition.

The story goes like this...
My skin (referring to my face throughout this post) started to be more hypoallergenic as coming to the end of last year. I couldn't help much on myself mainly because I was still staying at my hostel, preparing to sit for final exam. In other words, in the few weeks of intensive revision period, I suppose that the stress occurred along with hormonal changes also contributed to worsen the condition, too.

I had some prescribed topical cream from the well-known pharmacist in Bukit Mertajam, Penang once I got back to hometown. It worked on my face after a week of application as my mum also noticed about it. So, I was expecting that at least it could be heal or at least, stabilized because my family and I will be having Chinese New Year vacation in Bangkok.

And you know sometimes our wishes don't come true...

Dying hair for my mum and sister is my responsibility and I did that to them at that time, yes, when I was in the process of getting my skin heal...and so

OMFG

Something even serious (or shall I say 'chronic'?) SURPRISED ME IN SUCH A GREAT WAY.
Few days after dying hair for them, there were more and more unfamiliar things popped out, gradually more, bigger and even more horrible! I knew that some ultimate disaster is approaching to me as I got to see more undesirable stuff kept appearing on my face.

My life at that time had since became dull...

It sounds reasonable to avoid from facing public, but I even quarantined myself in room just to avoid from my family members as well! I didn't want to let them see my horrible faces seriously. I didn't know that they already actually noticed about my face but I guess this is how Asian families usually behave, they don't interact with each other until it had to on one day.

Shedding tears were then my routine...

I was having semester break that time, so my daily routine at home was eat, tvb drama, sleep and repeat. One more new thing was uncontrollably crying secretly from time to time. Despite that, I still kept myself to be a little positive one. I also spent a lot of my time searched online about this, the symptoms, treatment and even get to know some bloggers who were once suffered like this before. A significant one is Juli, a Singaporean blogger who owns Bun Bun Makeup Tips  I read her sharing about once her sufferings, hence, I got to be a little (just a little) positive that my problem would be fixed soon as well.

There goes the drama...

I remember it was Friday evening where crying and perfect storms began once again. I was a total mad one at that time! It was even more dramatic than you could imagine. No matter how many times my mum asked me to get out from room and let her see my condition, I replied her with even harder crying. Until I could feel the hidden sorrow on my mum's voice begging me, I only took my steps out of the room. I still remember that my sister kept passing me tissue paper so imagine there was a little mole of tissue papers beside me. With an unusual expression, my mum approached me, she observed how serious it really was. And not to miss some nagging and I was so much courageous just to speak out whatever I felt bad on their words to me before. You just don't care much when you are in a big big trouble. The next morning at 8.30, my mum sent me to a dermatologist and I was given some prescriptions of the treatment.

I never expected to face an even greater disaster on me...

Bangkok vacation still carried on despite my skin condition, I already prepared to wear face mask throughout my times at the outside. And even more dramatic things happened on the departure day. Not only me but also my family members were shocked to see adverse effect occurred on to my face! I can't do anything beside putting face mask and stay at a tip of positivism, I knew crying is simply helpless.

I didn't enjoy throughout the vacation...

I put on face mask yet I still find my way to avoid from the public's sight on the BTS, along the street, in shopping malls, hotel lobby etc... I remember about my dining experience along the street in Chinatown, Bangkok. face mask was still putting on till all dishes were served on table. I nodded all the time to eat and I settled it as soon as possible. I knew that were some puzzled looks thrown on me but I couldn't care much as I really did my best to avoid public's sight. So basically putting on face mask is my main thing to do at every corner I was in the city. I only put down the face mask when I backed to hotel and here's a little sorrow recall where I didn't wash my face with any cleanser because I don't wish to worsen it further. Imagine I was in the bathroom, stood in front of the mirror and brushing teeth and kept seeing my horrible face, I just used water to clean it and it was painful though.

Tears drop at the immigration counter...

To be honest, I didn't expect that it would happened in this way. I was asked to take off the face mask by the officer yet I did it half way where I lower it only reach to my chin. Then the officer asked to lower it down again, expecting me to take it off. I disobeyed till he said it one more time with a rather harsh way, I only managed to take it off from my face and the tears had started to race through in my eyes. I don't blame the officer as I know it is their responsibility to have thorough checking and he has the rights to give me such instructions as well.

Rushed to dermatologist on Day 3 of Chinese New Year...

I went to see Dr Ong Too as an emergency patient to be true. Thank God the clinic operated on third day of Chinese New Year. I knew that they charged rather higher compared to others yet when money and emergency comes to you, which would you choose? Alright, photos time, shall we? MAKE SURE YOU ARE 100% READY FOR IT.

[March 20, 2016] So this was the chronic situation I meant.
Big kind of pimples flourishing on my face with some little ones as well as redness occurred along.
It was from cheek to the mouth area.

[March 20, 2016] Same goes to the right side of my face

Undergoing treatment all these while...

Dr Ong prescribed me not only the mild cleanser and topical cream but also few oral medicine. I had no choice but to undergo all these treatments in order to have my skin get rid of this horrible stuff. Moreover, I had to keep follow up with the doctor for observation and essential treatment. More about this including the changes of my lifestyle will be revealed in my next post of this series, so stay tuned.

[April 5, 2016]  There were reduction of big pimples as you could see, left with small ones and scars and redness.

Shedding tears was my routine whenever I looked myself in the mirror to cleanse or to apply cream on my face. And the hurtful thing was, sometimes the pimples bleed on night time and I found it on my pillow the next morning. Cleansing my face was another challenge to go, to do the circular motions during cleansing, I did it in a ultra soft way and I touched and could feel how bad it was on every pimples through my fingers. In order to rinse the cleanser off my face, all I could do is 'wipe' it super super soft with my wet hands and sometimes it was hurt!

[April 5, 2016] But there were still some on the right side of my face.

At last, I took off my face mask...

I even put on face mask when I was in campus. Many of my coursemates never had to the chance to see how bad the situation was on to me that time. I even spared some in my bag just in case the one I was using has gone damaged because I really didn't wish to let them see at all. I knew that this scenario shouldn't be held on any longer, so I decided to free my face from face mask when I noticed the situation on my face has changed a lot, like the photos as below.

[June 8, 2016] Left with scars and redness to be healed

[June 8, 2016] Updates on the left side of my face

End of the month of June was the time I went back to hometown when I had ended the semester with final exam. My skin was a lot better compared to the photo as above, I stopped visiting Dr Ong and I switched to O2 Klinik. I guess Penangites are quite familiar with this skin clinic as the treatment and service provided is pretty excellent plus, reasonable charging fee. (not an advert here anyway)

The doctor was patient to listen to and understand my skin history and I was given some essential skin care to apply and follow up with the doctor every month. Since then, I cut off spicy food, dairy products and have plenty of water as well as sufficient hour of sleeping.

Finally, I'm backed to my big wide smile and laughter...

[October 3, 2016] Cropped photo of me, neither filter nor edit was applied on this photo

Now, I'm backed to being myself with laughter and my smile from time to time.

Thanks to my family and friends who gave me a lot of courage during that struggling time of mine.
Until today, I take good care of my skin too and be even more cautious on the food intake and activities. I want that to be history forever and ever. If you or your friends are encountering similar problems, you are much welcomed to regard this post as an encouragement one by sharing it out. I also welcome for any personal chat regarding this via email (mableseah@hotmail.com) Don't hesitate to ask me anything regarding to this, I'm here to give you advice and some suggestions to overpass this problem.

Coming next this series: Changes in my lifestyle.

Thank you very much for spending time to read this post.

In the process of drafting and completing this post, I took break for a few times to calm myself down. However, I'm proud of myself to be able to publish this post successfully in the end. I know I'm always a tough one because what doesn't kill me makes me stronger. Although it was a dull memories in my life, I still regard it to be part of it and I'm sincerely thankful over it because I've since became a better one.

PS: A new post from 'My Acne Nightmare' would be next, be prepared to hold your breath XD

Humble Review: 高渊 (利) 猪肉粉 Lye Lee Noodle House @ The One, Bayan Lepas, Penang

Clear soup noodles has been one of my favourite food since small. I'm sure our parents would cook or buy us either clear soup noodles or congee whenever we fell sick, that's why you are supposingly not to be strange towards it right? Moreover, we are now heading to the end of the year where rainy season occurs whereas monsoon season at the east side of the peninsula. Hence, cool weather could be expected to experience at slightly lower temperature and this kind of food is absolutely a great option to choose!

Lye Lee Noodle House is originally from Juru, a district of Seberang Prai, Penang. Upon receiving greater support from customers day by day, they had finally set up a branch at Bayan Baru area in the island. This well-known chinese restaurant continues to get huge responsiveness from the residents here. The main group of patronage goes to customers with families and white-collars.

No fancy design inside the restaurant, all simple tables and chairs.
It is always full house during meal hours, no reservation is required as the flow of patron is high in liquidity. I had my three times of patronage at different hours and I would say peak dinner hour was a little bit disappointing dining experience I've had among all. Know why? Read it till the end.

As usual, let me present to you the menu
Pork noodle (Clear soup) with a few of varieties to select
Price Range: RM 5 - 6
Add-on: RM 2

Tomyam hardcore fan might consider to try out tomyam noodle soup served here
Or perhaps Spicy & Sour Noodle Soup
Price is as low as RM 8
Add-on are available to make you more satisfied with your meal as well!

What about Claypot Porridge to soothe your tastebuds and also your tummy?
This section is mainly for at least 2 pax and above. Prefer personal one?
There you go to refer the menu as below

There are seven type of personal porridge served and the highest one they charge at only RM 15, quite reasonable for seafood porridge.

Targetting at most of us do enjoy to be indulged in steamboat, Lye Lee also has similar kind of food to excite your tastebuds!
Fish Head Steamboat sounds very nice!!!

And there are lotssss of side order/add on to pick.

Few choices of A la Carte that priced at RM 4 to RM 5

For selection of drinks, I always go for self-prepared drinks like herbal tea or chrysanthemum

Aha, these three on special laminated menu must be a surprise to first time patronage, especially.
I've never tried any of these before but it's not a bad choice to fix your cravings for maybe pork leg rice? Just in case if you miss your previous trip to Thailand, haha!

Alright, no more menu but food.

Silver Needle Noodle (commonly known as 'bee thai bak')
with minced pork and fish ball (clear soup)
RM 5
Looks simple but hey, it might be quite warm to consume when you are seeking for some light taste of food or maybe during cool weather.

Bihun in spicy and sour soup with fried fish
RM 8
This is prone to sourness with just a thin flavour of spiciness you could taste at the end of your sipping on the soup. A few pieces of fried fish act as a bonus to this bowl of noodle, too.

Bihun with pork and meat balls (clear soup)
RM 6
To be honest, I was very delighted the minutes I saw my order served on the table!
This bowl was superb! Satisfying portion is the main point and the generous amount of vegetables excite me as well! That's how the soup taste simply sweet and nice.

The signature chili sauce that you wouldn't want to miss out.
It is just mild spicy, great to have fishball to dip on some before eating.

However, I was a little bit disappointed on my last patronage on the past August. We were there at peak dinner hour, so it was expected to face some order traffic jam from kitchen, that was certainly fine but we didn't expect the food served on that time were odd in terms of taste, presentation and portion.

I had a total of three times patronage on this restaurant, the food served is various in terms of outlook and taste especially on my last patronage.

Bihun with minced pork and fish ball (clear soup)
RM 5

Omg, the presentation look so much cincai than my previous patronage ( as shown on previous photos on the thread )

Bihun with pork and meatball (clear soup)
RM 6
Another 'cincai' presentation of food

Both of the two photos as above did not taste as good as previously, the 'mild sweetness' from vegetables is hard to taste from the soup, specifically. Not sure if it was the little mistakes in food preparation made on the day or what, I was kind of awkward actually as I suggested this restaurant to my friend after her working hour...

Last one item to comment,

Fried Fish ( 4 pcs/ RM 3 )
It was quite oily which is not to our own liking, fairly taste anyway.

This is solely my personal review and dining experience that I had, it might be vary from time to time. However, I'm still recommend you to have at least one dining over there because the food is pretty good in overall.
