Jom Ke Kuantan: Non-stop eating!

Semester break is equivalent to a great hiatus for students. My friends and I had actually planned this while ago and we decided to officially end our fourth semester with a weekend getaway!

The main reason we selected Kuantan as our destination is because one of us is from there and to be honest, it's kind of rare for anyone to step into Kuantan for a short escape. So why not we appreciate and grab this chance to explore?

Kuantan is one of the cities in Malaysia. It's the state capital of Pahang, Kuantan near the mouth of Kuantan River and faces South China Sea.

Straight to the point, let me share with you some awesome food you ought to try it in Kuantan.

1. Nasi Lemak

It is definitely not strange to get yourself Nasi Lemak in the morning. This stall of Nasi Lemak is owned by a Chinese lady, it means Chinese style Nasi Lemak. There are a wide variety of side dished to add on such as curry chicken, salted-fish curry (咸鱼咖喱) and fish curry with ikan kembung.
Personally, I don't really eat salted-fish curry but this one is an exception. I fell in love at first taste LOL perhaps it just simply favoured to my taste buds.
RM 19 for 3 pax for the servings as above.
The stall is closing as early as 10 due to good respond from people there.

If you are looking for a normal servings, here it is.
RM 2.50 per serving inclusive of rice, peanuts, sliced cucumbers, choices of poached or hard-boiled egg and sambal cili.
The rice here is not prepared with coconut milk (santan)

You can find it at Kedai Kopi Ah Soon as it is one of the hawker stalls inside.

The landmark would be Hospital KPJ Kuantan.
Kedai Kopi Ah Soon is located right beside of it.
There are other foods ready to kick start your day as well, for example, Curry Mee, Pan Mee (板面/面粉糕) and a variety of kuih-muih (糕点)

It opens its door for breakfast and brunch hour only. (早市)

Business hour: Breakfast and early brunch time
Nearest landmark: KPJ Kuantan

2.Beijing Noodle (北京面)
The shop owner is a Chinese from China and he accommodates with local flavour in serving Beijing Noodle. The texture of the noodle tastes similarly like the Pan Mee in Penang. The highlight would be 麻辣汤, simply superb as it will make your tongue numb gradually (at the end you finished eating) with its fair spiciness.
There are few choices to choose from, all of them are served generously, just right enough for a big eater like us.

麻辣汤面 (Spicy noodle soup)
RM 5.50

紫菜汤面 (Seaweed soup noodle)
RM 5.50

水饺汤面 (Clear soup noodle with dumplings)
RM 5.00

干捞面 (Dried noodle with soup)
RM 5.50
You are welcomed choose either 麻辣汤 (Spicy soup) or 清汤 (Clear soup)

A closer view of Beijing noodle, it looks similarly as Pan Mee we can get in Penang, ain't it?

It's definitely the highlight of Dumpling soup noodle!
The meat inside is chewy and simply compatible with 汤包, really ho chiak, damn worth.

Spot the tauke at the counter!
买单时老板那浓郁的中国腔还真的让你仿佛身在北京呢。呵呵

I'm not sure about its business hour but I guess it would be around brunch time till late afternoon because we dined in at 2p.m.

Beijing Mee Restaurant is located opposite of Ambank branch at Jalan Haji Abdul Aziz.

3.Pan Mee (板面/面粉糕)
Located same row of shop lots as Bejing Mee Restaurant, we get ourselves the signature Pan Mee at
Y&L (妙计面粉糕)

Look at the clear surface of the Pan Mee! How could you resist towards it...
RM 5.00 (Small)

Standard price at RM 5 for small and RM 6 for large serving

Friendly reminder, Y&L serves mainly during breakfast hour and the latest closing time is around 1 or 2pm, make sure you plan yout schedule well to avoid disappointment!
It's at the same row of shop lot as Beijing Mee Restaurant, also opposite of AmBank branch at Jalan Haji Abdul Aziz.

4. Curry Noodle

Hoi Yin (海燕) Curry Noodle is a must to try out whenever you are in Kuantan. Unfortunately, Hoi Yin didn't open business throughout our 3D2N getaway. So, we are introduced to this curry noodle at Singrena kopitiam. PS: Singrena kopitiam and Satay Zul share the same row of shop lot!

You have to pick some add-ons and pass it to the auntie. Then, tell her your choice of noodle either bihun or Lembing Noodle (林明面) or both

OS: Huh? What kind of noodle is that?
No worries, you would be know it soon on my following post

RM 5.80 inclusive of  noodle and 3 add-ons.
PS: Considered pricey due to its portion served.

The major difference would be the curry soup.
In Northern region of Malaysia, or precisely, Penang, the soup served is rather diluted with the mixture of herbs and chilli paste associated with coconut milk.
The texture here is rich and more to the curry broth from typical curry chicken. To my personal favour, I could just get it to mix with rice for a meal.

5.Cendol & Temosa

I regard it as the best remedy in these hot days. The famous and most favourited by the locals would be Ibrahim Cendol at Jalan Air Putih.

The business hour for Bulan Ramadan (Fasting Month) is 3pm to 6pm daily.
Usual business hour is from 12noon till evening.

Cendol with red beans RM 2.00
PS: I prefer this to Penang Famous Teo Chew Cendol, the cendol here serve more generously and the red bean is right in size to chew. One downside is the lack of the amount of shaved ice. I demand for more! hehe

If you happen to have yourself cendol here, then Temosa is another add-on you shouldn't be missed.
It looks exactly like curry puff we can have in any mamak stall but it differs somehow that the ingredients are the minced fish where it looks slightly like anchovy (ikan bilis)
RM 0.50 per piece, not a bad option to try.

6. Terminal Satay Zul

Make sure you make it a point to try this out if you happen to swing by to Kuantan! I'm not regret to leave Kuantan with a delight taste of satay at Terminal Satay Zul. Satay Zul opens its door to customers at 6pm onwards daily.

The satay here is served with full meat, unlike what we usually get a skewer consists of a mix of meat and fats.

The seasoned meat is tender and flavourful, perfectly goes well with the peanut sauce!
RM 0.80 per skewer for chicken meat

The air ventilation is medium although the grilling is done outdoor.

There are two floors of seating to accommodate the large volume flow of customers from time to time.  Other signature including Nasi Impit, Nasi Dagang, Nasi Lemak and Bakso.

Second post coming up next! Stay tuned.

Humble Review: Boat Noodles @ Noodle Doodle, New World Park, Penang.

Good food are meant and always deserve for further patronizing. I paid second visit to Noodle Doodle last Friday and my first visit was just 2 months ago. All thanks to the featured deal available in Groupon where I spotted it on one fine day.
I had a great dining experience in my last visit so why not give a try again since my friend has yet to try?

Boat noodle was a totally strange food to me before I'd turned into a Thailand mania. It is originated from Thailand which is known as kuai tiao ruea by the locals. You wouldn't be strange of it if you happened to visit any floating markets in Thailand. Since long, boat noodle is served in small portion with the stall set up on a boat along the riverside. It is for the convenience and safety of both patron and merchant where they make transaction with a long wooden stick. Boat noodle is still a famous food in Thailand to date and you may get it in standard portion one in normal restaurant.

There are few boat noodles restaurant opened in Kuala Lumpur few years ago and thanks to those enthusiastic entrepreneurs who made investments to bring this to Penang lately. Noodle Doodle is apparently one of them.

Let me show you what we got upon the voucher.
20 bowls of boat noodles for only RM 19 which mean each costs nearly RM 1 only.

Noodle Doodle Restaurant is located at New World Park, beside Mizi Bistro.

Kitchen is exposed to public where you could see the whole preparation.
This three hashtags is essential to all of you, I suppose.
By check in to social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram and Foursquare with any of these hashtags, you are entitled for a bowl of boat noodle for FREE!

Noodle Doodle provides simple dining environment to customers with cement floor and wooden chairs and tables.
Air ventilation is fairly good though.

This is the list of menu.
Normal price for a boat noodle is RM1.90.
Two flavours to choose, Original and Tomyam, both available in soup or dry.
Side dishes and a variety of drinks are up to order to be satisfied as well.

Since we are the first customer who stepped in 15 minutes after its business hour, thus we did not wait long for ours.
5 bowls for each type, Original (soup and dry) and also Tomyam (soup and dry)

Tomyam boat noodle (Soup)
RM 1.90 (usual price)
A mild aroma of tom yam would be perfect for those spiciness seekers who can't really stand with it.
Suitable for children as well.

Tomyam boat noodle (Dry)

RM 1.90 (usual price)

Spot the tom yam paste? That's the key where it works nicely after you mix it well.
Personally prefer dry version to soup one in tom yam flavour.

Original boat noodle (Dry)
RM 1.90 (usual price)
It comes with a slightly strong aroma of the Thai soy sauce with the helps of celery. Ho Chiak.

Original boat noodle (Soup)
RM 1.90 (usual price)
Soup version is even better than dry version because of its soup where I finished it all.
Tofu-tofu RM 5.50
I've been reading many good comments about this side dish but somehow the taste buds of everyone varies but I didn't get disappointed with it this time.
The bean curd is fried wonderfully where the outer skin is crispy and soft, a little bit fluffy inside.
Eat it together with sliced cucumber and the thai-style chili sauce, perfect!
Again, the spiciness is rather mild. It comes with thai style of sweet and spicy sauce and I dare you to just scoop and eat the sauce alone, no problem at all.
So you think you can eat up to 36 bowls of boat noodle or even more?
There is a activity, kind of True of Dare game.
If you manage to break the record on the board by finish up bowl noodles by your own, Noodle Doodle pay for you and you will be rewarded RM 50 at the same time.
This is the record I'd captured last Friday, 35 bowls.
You could just visit Noodle Doodle Facebook Page for updated record.
P.S: Not sure it is because of the Groupon deal I bought up this time, the portion is smaller compared to my first visit (Groupon deal: RM 1 per bowl, usual: RM 1.90)

Humble Review: Midnight Curry Noodle @ Jalan Pekan Cina, Alor Star, Kedah.

Yeah my blog is full of dust and it's time for this owner aka cleaner to on duty, right now!!!
It's merely hard that having a really free time now, submission of assignments and presentation are all in track since lecture week goes until next week only. At least, I'm free today.

I only knew it from one of my friends about this famous curry noodle last week despite I've already got four semesters in uni. So, 5 of us had a midnight escape this time. Midnight escape is the first time experience for some of us but it's acceptable because young people deserve some, occasionally.

Frankly speaking, I could smell the aroma of the curry in such distance where this photo was taken.
As the title stated, the curry noodle stall operates from 11p.m. till 5a.m. the next day.
The stall is placed right in front of a coffee shop and there are lots of tables and chair ready serve the customers as well.
Standard size of a bowl of curry noodle is RM 3.50
But there are a variety of add-ons available to pick, ranging from sausages, many kind of meatballs, bean curds to cuttlefish or even sliced abalone!
All you have to do is pick whichever you like ( of course in appropriate amount ) in an empty bowl provided and then pass it to uncle.

Then just tell uncle if you want to add 猪血糕 ( black pudding ) in your noodle.

Two big servings of curry noodle is up on table after nearly 15 minutes of waiting time.
Total RM 17,  2 bowls for 5 pax.
We had 5 mini taiwan sausage balls, 1 cuttlefish, 5 quail eggs(鹌鹑蛋) and another one sort of yong tau fu dish.
It definitely looks tantalizing but the aroma is more to the Chinese style home cook curry ( slightly stronger here with the helps of coconut milk ) where we usually take it together with rice.
Add-on and noodles taste fairly.
Personally, I could get a much better one in Penang, not really in a high favour to a Penangite like me, I suppose.
我本身也比较爱吃重口味的食物啦 XD

The owners are also friendly and easy-approached too. We even had a small talk before we left. They asked us if we want to take away some back to hostel since they claimed that it can last till afternoon.

Friendly Reminder:
  1. Kindly wear trousers if you don't wish to be the hunted target of the mosquitoes.
  2. There are a number of stray dogs there nut not harmful at all.
  3. Take good care of your belongings since the stall is set up at roadside and there are vehicles passing by all the time.
Summary
Scaling point: 0- lowest ; 5- highest

Taste: 2.5/5 (Demand for stronger aroma)
Dining Ambience: 2.5/5
Vehicles Parking: 4/5 (Many empty slots available)

The stall is not detected under Google map, but here's a brief guide to reach there. It is just located along Jalan Pekan Cina as shown.

Humble Review : Spade's Burger at i-Avenue, Bayan Lepas, Penang.

I wouldn't call my mid-sem break as one without hunting for food with friends.
So last week, a random dinner outing was carried out with my ex-classmate ( primary school one ! )
And we satisfied our stomach at Spade's Burger restaurant.

Spade's Burger initially started its business at Pekaka Square at Sungai Dua, it extended its business which then moved to i-Avenue. It is absolutely a good thing that they set up a restaurant in Bayan Lepas area where weekdays customers are mainly factory workers from Bayan Lepas industrial site. But from my observation of twice visitings, it is still an attraction to all walks of life, even elder ones also dine in there with families. The seats are usually fully occupied anyway.

This big chalk board would be caught on your right hand side once you enter the restaurant.
It's the menu they serve in conjunction of go-green concept and also an effective way while making order, less time-consuming !

There are a variety of burgers which mainly consist of pork, beef, chicken, fish and good news to vegetarian or non-meat diner, there are 3 choices to choose from as well.

The price is set as low as RM 10 for A la carte. You could also add RM 5.50 to get into a set meal which include refillable soft drinks and fries.
Personal experience : I ordered only A la carte for two times and I really feel very full after managed to finish the burger for a medium eater like me. Perhaps you could order set meal for maybe one or two among your friends and share it together since the drinks is refillable.

It took us roughly 20 minutes to get our burger served as it was dinner time at 7p.m.

Baconizer ( Pork )
RM 15.70 ( A la Carte )
Bacon lover would favourite this for sure! There are two thick layered bacons placed between the charcoal buns, Bacons are prepared in soft tender with some juicy within. Awesome! Another bonus goes to the crispy cheese, a mild salty taste of cheese would  lead you to eat it separately from the burger.

Closer view of Baconizer, simply tantalizing!

My friend ordered Baconizer of beef version.

See the thick layer of beef, nom nom
Beef Baconizer, rm 12.70 ( A La Carte )
The beef was slightly fried but the juicy taste still remain within. Lettuce was freshly served on both of our servings.

In my two-cents review, Spade's Burger really do their best to serve burger lover, particularly the locals to a higher level of satisfactory. The price is slightly higher but you would realise that it has been paid off when you are continuously having big bites on your burger later.

There is another outlets at Pulau Tikus and good news to mainland people, Spade's Burger will have an outlet at Butterworth in May later, as announced on Facebook lately.

CNY 2015 IN BANGKOK: Day 3 Itinerary

Our first destination hit up early in the morning of third day being there was China Town. It is located at Yaowarat. Transportation is needed for sure in order to get there.  After finished stock up our stomach with buffet breakfast at the lobby, we asked for direction at the receptionist. A female lady which is able to speak fluent English really helped us a lot by giving guide on a piece of paper with some Thai word stated, just in case we can ask people around.

We hopped on public bus at the bus station opposite Indra Square. It is nearby the pedestrian bridge, in front of a convenient store called Family Mart.

Spot Indra Regent Hotel? The bus stop is opposite of the hotel, near to Makkasan Color Lab. You may zoom in the map for have a clearer view. There is the bus stop where we hopped on bus no. 73, super cooling air conditioned bus, I suppose. It is clean inside even though the age of the bus is rather old but the maintenance performance is still simply awesome. 15 baht charged per passenger. Take note that you should not take the first seat near the front entering door, it is reserved for the monks in Thailand. Also, the front seats are usually prioritized to women with children and pregnant ladies. Just in case they are on the bus, make sure you make a way for them.

We were kind of afraid and blank, didn't know which stop we should get down. The ticket seller would call out the bus stop's name or street name when it is almost reach. It takes around 20-30 minutes from Pratunam to reach China Town, depends on traffic flow as well. If you wish to go to China Town, I would recommend to depart at around 8 to 9 a.m. in the local time. The traffic flow at morning session still consider fair. Avoid stuck in the massive traffic jam which would occur from 11 a.m. onwards.

There's an alternative to reach China Town if you depart at Pratunam area. You can always try on the boat service at the Pratunam Pier and then take a cab to reach Yaowarat. If you wish to go to Chinatown at noon time, then taking boat service would be a better alternative than taking road transportation.

No photos were taken during our visit to Chinatown (what the heck?), partly because we didn't find any much interest to explore due to the weather and we were already full, not in the mission to hunt for food although there are a variety of well known delicious food and snacks available there.
There is a Tesco Lotus store at China Town and we really went into the store purely for the sake of air-cond
Let me get some images from Google which are similar to what I saw when I was there.

There are lots of accessories sold, ranging from CNY decoration items to ladies' accessories.
Hardly saw apparel sold there anyway.

We were there for around 2 hours by just walking around and buying some snacks and then we took the same bus, bus no. 73 back. This time we chose to stop at Central World and got ourselves in air-conditioned malls for some rest. Shortly after, we headed for lunch. The famous SABX2 Wan Tan Mee ! Yes, it's like finally!

SABX2 shop is located nearby Glow Hotel, Shibuya 19 Shopping Mall. We walked through the pedestrian bridge in front of the Platinum Fashion Mall and then keep walking until you see Shibuya then turn right into the street. You would soon spot a long queue in front of a shop, that's SABX2.

We queued up for nearly 30 minutes outside the shop and yes, underneath the hot sun.

The service attendants are able to speak fluent Mandarin. And all in speedy way, I suppose.
This specialty of this so-called famous wan tan mee is the sauce used. In Malaysia, Wan Tan Mee is served in dark brown sauce but this one rather transparent. It tastes fairly, slightly similar like what we can get in Malaysia. It looks drier than the ones in Malaysian's serving yet it tastes rather moisture with the taste of soy sauce oil or whatever.  Awesome though for different sauce used but come out with the taste that most Malaysian ans Singaporean visitors like.
The barbecued pork ( 叉烧 )is a bonus for pork lover like me.
50 Baht per serving.
Some eaters even look it as boat noodles, this portion is seriously much bigger than that of boat noodles, salute them anyway.

You would definitely hook up with the braised pork leg rice while you are waiting for your seats.
The huge hot pot that keep on braising the pork leg looks simply tantalizing and the way the person in charge chop the meat in seconds would lure your taste buds, guaranteed!

It was 1 p.m. by the time we managed to settle our lunch. My mum and I went for a walk at the shops nearby and also Platinum Fashion Mall while my dad and siblings took Tuk-tuk back to hotel for rest. Price charged on Tuk-tuk service is reasonable, 20 Baht for adult whereas 10 Baht for child. Tuk-tuk in Bangkok is different than in Hatyai ones! I didn't manage to grab a chance to try though, it's okay anyhow because I believe that I will pay another visit to Bangkok.

Out of surprise,I spotted this machine foot massage at the ground floor of Platinum Fashion Mall.
10 Baht for 10 minutes service.
Make sure you have enough coins to accumulate into 10 Baht
It started with mild vibration followed by a vigorous one for few minutes which you would feel numb on your feet .
The service ended with warm air released onto your feet just to let them feel comfortable.
I saw 8 machines there so there's a high chance to get yourself one when you are seeking for it.

We then backed to hotel and took a nap. Our last dinner for this trip was settled at Big C food court, again. Super love Big C food court for its dining environment, ambiance and the food served. Not really into photography addict because I care more about my stomach when it comes to food. But I could share some comments of the food, Tomyam seafood soup with omelette and fragrant rice is my favourite! It served at 60 baht in a big portion of tomyam soup with a lots of meat and mushroom and instant-cooked omelette. I'd never missed to get myself a plate of chicken rice, 45 Baht if I'm not mistaken, or lesser. Put aside calories stuff and enjoy it, of course, the clear soup is kind of refreshing after you've mouthful of chicken meat and rice, it's apparently no MSG added, suitable for children especially. After meal, try to taste the dessert if possible, there is one stall who selling hot and cool desserts. Since we'd been there twice for our meals, we had tried Leng Chi Kang, Durian with glutinous rice and hot dessert. Price range between 30-45 Baht but I could still remember the hot dessert is just 20 Baht only. There are a 3-4 variety to choose from, we pick banana. So mainly the our hot dessert served is the banana in warm sweet and slightly thick-textured soup.

On the way back from Big C, we would pass through Pratunam Pier.
Boat service at the pier and the passengers all act dangerously to get into the boat just before the boat stops moving.
As far I know, taking boat service is an alternative to China Town. But you have to transfer to take cab to reach exactly at China Town.
Tall buildings are not hardly seen yet the traditional things still move on.
It's somehow a little bit mesmerized with the traditional transportation exist in the bustling city, awesome anyway.

So, we just mainly walking around Pratunam area in our last night in this trip and patronized 7-11 again for supper and whatsoever we feel like we shouldn't miss from getting. The next day, my mum and I woke up early and visit Pratunam morning market for the second time and lucky me for getting myself shorts which sold at 90 Baht per piece. We then packed our luggage and off to Don Mueang Airport shortly after we've got our breakfast.

Getting off to Don Mueang Airport is easy as just like how we did where we landed on our first day of the trip, just in another way round.
We walked to Airport Rail Link Ratchaprarop Station, only 0.3km from hotel , 4 minutes walking distance. 15 Baht charged for each passenger from Ratchaprarop Station to Phaya Thai Station.

Airport Rail Link at Ratchaprarop Station.

BTS Phaya Thai Station.

It's only one station to reach and Phaya Thai station is also the terminal station. Then we walked along the pedestrian bridge to BTS Phaya Thai Station. Self-service paying machine was in a busy queuing flow at the peak hour of 9 in the morning. Single journey fare at 34 Baht per person which we would get down at the terminal station of BTS, Mo Chit. Then, walk down to the bus station and wait for A1 bus which you could reach airport. Instead, we didn't see A1 bus by the time we reached the bus stop. There are an alternative which we used. Van service charged only 20 Baht per person ( The fare of A1 bus is 30 Baht ). There are various ferry service where you can ask the person in charge who would keep naming the stops that the van service provides. These vans are parked at around the entrance of MRT Chatuchak Station. MRT Chatuchak station is also a short walking distance from the bus stop.

We landed safely at Penang Airport at nearly 4p.m.
There comes to the end of my sharing about the itinerary on my family trip during CNY 2015.
No doubt, Bangkok is a shopping heaven for ladies and food paradise for all. The convenience of the transportation is an added reason for more visiting in future as well.
In short, we did enjoy the trip and there are still a lot of amazing places to be discovered because Amazing Thailand is just simply AMAZING !
