Humble Review: Caffe Diem @ Pekan Cina, Alor Setar, Kedah

A hipster cafe you must not be missed in Alor Setar. No jokes, I mean it.

Considered one of the on-trend hangout spots for people in the city of Alor Setar, Caffe Diem (likely to be pronounced as 'Dae-em'), 'Caffe' is an Italian word stands for coffee where 'Diem' is a Latin word, literally means 'per day' or 'each day'.
Thus, in my two-cents, the meaning of Caffe Diem simply stands for having a cup of coffee everyday.

Caffe Diem has sinced serving customers in the mid of year 2014 and yet there was a 10-day-closing for renovation as well as relocation. It then reopened last month, on 11th May 2016. Worry not, Caffe Diem has just moved few lots away from its previous or origin lot. Now, Caffe Diem is no longer a shop lot along Jalan Penjara Lama but moved to a new premises, which is a corner side double-storey cafe to serve even more customers at a time.

Phone taken during the renovation period
I paid my very first visit to Caffe Diem on its first day of reopening. The cafe was packed with patrons all the time. To be honest, it was hard to get a seat for myself too. Served by a waitress upon my step-in, I was straight away told that no more seat available at indoor but only outside, the al-fresco area. Reluctantly to have a seat for myself as this was my only aim to come downtown all the way, afterall.
So you could expect smokers are there to sip their coffee and smoke to chill their times.

However, the God of Luck heard about me, I found an empty seat at indoor shortly after. *Simply cannot stand with the smoke from cigarette, sorry to say it.*

The announcement about 'free coffee' by Caffe Diem on its Facebook Page.

Let me get you right about it. Free coffee means no charge for any item you order. However, it was highly promoted to make a donation. It simply means you are free to pay the amount of money for your ordered item and they will be contributed to the Chinese community , according to the waitress who served me.

Upon ordering, I was told that the waiting time would be much longer if main-course is ordered. Since I didn't really intend to do so, I go for cakes only.

I suppose that the cakes are outsourced, indeed the four slices that ordered were incredibly tasty and irresistible.

Clockwise from top: Harum Manis,Triple Decker, Michael Jackson and Brownie

You could taste the sincere preparation including the generous amount of ingredients put for the sake of quality.

Triple Decker (RM11/slice)
Three flavours mixture including coffee, white chocolate and lastly topped by oreo.
Mixture of bit of caffeine and sweetness from both white chocolate and oreo, it didn't fail to get my every pleasant cut on it.

Michael Jackson (RM10/slice)
Shout out to chocolate lover, this is certainly the top favourite for you! The name itself, MJ says it all. Dark chocolate that topped with white chocolate blended excellently in giving you irresistible tasting. Plus, having a little bit of moist and creamy, it's indeed a thrilling tasting.
Strongly recommend this.

Brownies (RM10/slice)
The taste alone is not bad, like usual brownie that we can get from others. The bonus is it doesn't crumble much on each cut.
However, it didn't outperform among the cakes as the other three really stood out excellently, oops.

Harum Manis (RM 12/slice)
Another brand new local and fruity flavour to me.
Durian or Mango flavoured cake is no longer a new thing,
how about a combination flavour of these two?
Another must-have cake in house especially if you love both durian and mango flavoured food.
Having less creamy texture than others yet didn't lost the moist,
this really boarden my tasting experience.
The cake alone is made of necessary ingredients and durian flavour and having a cut together with small pieces of mango guarantees for indulgent tasting.

I'm looking forward for my second visit in near future. Kudos to the service provided by the staff anyway. It may commonly found in the cafes in Penang but certainly, Caffe Diem deserves to be the best cafe in the city of Alor Setar, I suppose.

  1. Hi, thanks for a good review. The cakes are hand baked by the boss's mum. Being a hipster and famous cafe, it is always full house and visited by famous people, tourist, and local.

    Best regards,
    Louise from Alor Setar
